Electrical Safety

JDRM Engineering created the Electrical Safety Department in response to the needs and requests of our clients.  A comprehensive program was developed covering electrical safety.  Services include arc flash calculations, mitigation, coordination, electrical safety classroom training, and a written electrical safe work practices program.  Check out our Case Study on Mission Health System and their implementation of JDRM Engineering’s electrical safety services.

All of our Electrical Safety services are governed by the 2018 NFPA-70E 110.3 Electrical Safety Program directive.  This requirement states “The employer shall implement and document an overall Electrical Safety Program that directs activity appropriate for the electrical hazards, voltage, energy level, and circuit conditions”. OSHA CFR Sub Part S  1910.333 – “Selection and Use of Work Practices” adds additional requirements for employers:  “Safety-related work practices shall be employed to prevent electric shock or other injuries resulting from either direct or indirect electrical contacts when work is performed near or on equipment and/or circuits which are or may be energized.” This article is just one example of OSHA activity in this area.

JDRM has served as a third-party consultant, reviewing OSHA citation issues and offering mitigation suggestions to satisfy OSHA requirements.  Our track record related to very specific electrical safety recommendations has been commended by both clients and governmental personnel. Bob Nicholson has published an article to clarify the similarities and differences of electrical safety in the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standard 70E – Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace.

Learn from the professionals at JDRM Engineering

Mr. Brandon A. Stotz, P.E., CESCP, is a licensed Electrical Engineer and an Associate at JDRM Engineering. Brandon has significant experience with Arc Flash and electrical system analysis, standard electrical building design (lighting, power, fire alarm), and medium voltage power distribution design. Brandon is JDRM Engineering’s manager of the Electrical Safety Group and offers safety training in three different employee job classifications. Brandon is an NFPA Certified Electrical Safety Compliance Professional (CESCP).

Mr. Robert D. Nicholson, CESCP, was a Senior Electrical Designer and Arc Flash Specialist. Bob recently retired. He used his passion and engaged in educating companies and their employees regarding Electrical Safe Work Practices and Arc Flash Hazards for many years.  His life goal is to ensure no one else suffers electrical burns as he did in an Arc Flash incident while working as a Master Electrician. Bob was an in-demand spokesman on Electrical Safe Work Practices who routinely provides classroom instruction, awareness seminars, and written programs (as outlined by current OSHA & NFPA 70E standards and regulations) for many firms.  Bob was a member of the International Association of Electrical Inspectors and a six-year member of the National Electrical Code (NEC) Panel 3.  Bob is an NFPA Certified Electrical Safety Compliance Professional (CESCP) and an adjunct professor at Owens Community College and Terra State Community College. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Northwest Ohio Safety Council. Additional certifications include Journeyman Electrician with IBEW Local 8; Electrical Contractor Toledo; Electrical Contractor Ohio; Master Electrician Michigan; and Past Electrical Code Instructor Ohio and Michigan. He is extremely well-versed in Arc Flash NFPA 70E and its relationship to OSHA 29 CFR Sub Part S 1910.331-335, as well as MIOSHA Part 40.

After 100+ employees at Michigan State University completed Electrical Safe Work Practices training with Bob the school posted an update on their blog. JDRM Engineering appreciates their remarks:

“The instructor did a great job connecting with the crews and the type of work that is being conducted at IPF,” Nurenberg said. “This connection and Mr. Nicholson’s ability to make complicated problems seem simple to understand was a good investment for the employees.”

An attendee of another session shared:

It honestly saved my life

“I’ve been through this training with you at my company and it honestly saved my life,” explained one attendee of Bob’s training. “The very next day after the training we went to reset a larger 480-volt breaker (which we did daily) and I shut the power off this time because that was the safe way to do it.  We closed and latched the door. When we turned the power on the breaker exploded. It would have been directly in my face about 18” away.  I was not injured because I followed the training you gave. I am very grateful, and my family is as well.”

It is common practice for consulting firms to simply print these labels from a software template without asking the client for their input. Because it is the most visible and actively consulted component of an Arc Flash study, JDRM Engineering involves our clients in the content requirements and design of their labels. Each label JDRM Engineering supplies is customized to our client's needs.
